City should focus on street repair
Over the past year or so, I have been reading about plans to create a downtown riverside boardwalk behind Water Street, which plans have apparently evolved into a “Pavilion Park and Promenade” to “provide a distinctive, economically viable, visually beautiful, culturally rich, etc., etc., environment to attract increasing numbers of residents and visitors to the city’s heart.”
As someone who actually lives and works in Kerrville, I really would be thrilled if the city would repair the pothole-ridden, crumbling streets which must be traversed in order to reach that heart. While it may be aesthetically charming, the Pavilion does nothing for the day-to-day commuters and travelers, and if money can be provided for aesthetics, surely it can be provided for basic street maintenance.
Also, I might add, once a street surface is restored, leave it alone for a while. Hardly is the oil cooled before someone is digging into it to “repair” some sub-surface something. I realize that jurisdiction falls under city, county and state agencies, and therein, no doubt, lies the problem, but it seems that priorities need readjustment when it comes to our roadways vs. pavilions and promenades.

Thank yous to Daily Times NIE sponsors
To everyone who sponsored the Newspapers in Education:
My students didn’t realize the importance of newspapers until I used the Kerrville Daily Times in the classroom this year, so … Here’s to you sponsors — THANKS so much!
Cathy Behrens
Thank you so much for your helping to provide newspapers for my classroom. We use the newspapers as part of the curriculum in yearbook, newspaper and journalism classes; and students from all my classes read the paper often. We appreciate your generosity.
Jan Syphrett, Center Point High School, English/Journalism
I really appreciate the newspaper program that you have with Tivy. I teach algebra I and TAKS lab classes.
One of the constant problems we have with students is their question, “How does this relate to the real world after we get out of school?” The newspaper always gives me ways to use real world math in my classes.
I use the want ads so kids can figure out the costs of vehicles on their salaries.
We can decide whether rent costs are going up or down.
We talk about the range of housing costs in this area.
Any maps, charts or graphs are always worked into their daily
warm-ups.
I use the discounts and coupons to have them figure out how much they are saving on things that their families normally buy.
Mean, median, mode and range are the central tendencies. We can use the weather charts and the stock reports to help relate those fundamentals.
Probability is always causing difficulties on TAKS. Having them predict the weather and how often the weatherman is right helps them understand the difference between theoretical and experimental probability.
The newspaper has been very helpful this year. And yes, they also fight over who gets the Sudoku puzzle. I cannot argue too much as it, too, uses numbers.
Mrs. Honea
Thank you. Thank you. My students have really appreciated having a paper to read and use for projects. They were able to keep up on local events, debates, sports, and many other issues that were in the paper. I hope to use them again next year.
