Salladin tops Armstrong in mountain bike race

Published January 29, 2008

COMFORT — For a good part of the race, Adam Salladin rode with some big-name company at last weekend’s The Miles of DisComfort Mountain Bike Marathon Event at Flat Rock Ranch.

Then, Lance Armstrong had to drop out.

Armstrong showed up for the third race of the Hill Country Bicycle Works Mountain Bike State Championship Marathon Series, but the seven-time Tour de France winner dropped out heading into the final 11 miles — cramping — while Hill Country Bicycle Works owner Salladin went on to finish fourth overall and first in his 40-49 age group with a time of 4:29:58.

Gearing up to do the Leadville 100, Armstrong admitted he had a few tricks to learn in order to take on the tougher mountain bike endurance races.

The state championship series is sponsored by local bike shop Hill Country Bicycle Works, and Team HCBW, also sponsored by the local bike shop, placed well.

Brian Wright of Fredericksburg finished fourth in the 50-over men (6:16.05).Richmond Frasier of Boerne finished fourth in 40-49 Men (4:40:11), and Tammy Killebrew of Austin won the 40-over women’s race and finished second overall in 5:43:46.

Several of the HCBW juniors competed in the 26-mile half marathon race. Luke Allen, 13, finished 12th and Alex Scott, 12, was 16th in men 19-34. Megan Steward, 15, placed fourth in women 19-34.
