Kinky Friedman appears to have plenty of Kerr County supporters.
The results of a poll conducted this week indicate that of the 115 Times’ readers represented in phone and e-mail responses, 75 percent believe he has a shot at winning the governor’s race on Nov. 7. The majority of respondents — 86 — said they will vote for Friedman.
Among the comments the Times heard were:
• “Kinky can win. I intend to vote for him. He may look dumb, but that man is smart.”
• “I think he knows more about what’s going on, and he’s an animal lover, that’s one good thing for him.”
• “The Republicans and Democrats have put their special interests before the general public. I think Kinky Friedman is for the people. He is going to do a good job and straighten the education system out.”
• “I think Kinky Friedman has a real good chance of winning. I think everyone is tired of the status quo — the cheaters and stealers in Austin.”
• “He is a real person. There’s nothing fake about him. He says things in a real sense that concern him and the people in Texas. I feel sure if thinking people go to the polls and vote, they will vote for him.”
• “I plan to vote for Kinky. How bad can he be?”
Just not for Kinky
Sixteen respondents didn’t specify a choice other than they won’t vote for Kinky:
• “I don’t believe I want to vote for Mr. Kinky. He has yet to come out with anything I agree with.”
• “The man is a complete joke. Texas will be in serious trouble if people don’t understand you can’t elect a man who is a comedian and has no knowledge of the laws of government. I am absolutely appalled people would consider voting for this man.”
• “I would say on Kinky Friedman, absolutely not. We don’t need a guy like that as our governor. It would be a very black day for the state of Texas. He is not qualified.”
• “I think Kinky Friedman is a idiot.”
From Rick Perry supporters
• “We think that independent like Kinky Friedman is not qualified to be governor. He knows nothing about multi-million dollar budgets.”
• “Gov. Perry will be the next governor. The question is whether he gets 50 percent. On Kinky, it will be interesting to see if he can beat the Democrat (Chris Bell) and one-time Republican Carole Rylander.”
• “I plan on voting for Rick Perry. It’s possible Friedman has a chance, if he’d clean up his personal appearance.”
From Carole Keeton Strayhorn supporters:
• “Vote for the woman. I won’t vote for Kinky, and he won’t get elected.”
From Chris Bell supporters
• “I don’t believe Kinky Friedman has a chance. We’re Democrats and will vote for Chris Bell.”
The readers have spoken. Now its down to the voters. The gubernatorial election is Nov. 7.
